THE annual 10-day Gastronomica festival in Knysna opens on September 23 with an explosive fusion of fashion and food at the Royal Romance Fashion Show and High Tea. The Royal Romance Fashion Show is choreographed along the lines of an extravaganza which includes musicians, fire-dancers and pythons. Mexico, Britain, Japan, France and Knysna's own Noetzie will set the theme, which will also make use of flora and fauna art in the form of headdresses created by DP Ferreira of Natural Floral De-sign.The show will feature fashion houses including Tommy Hilfiger, Gill Lakay, Frock, Caramel and True Religion Jeans. The Knysna-based models participating in the show have been trained by the show's producer, Lizell Ferreira, and include 15 girls from disadvantaged backgrounds. "We wanted to give something more than just a donation to these young people. To give them ' life-skills is so much more valu- ! able," said Lizell. Gastronomica, which runs until i October 1, will be a food lover's 1 paradise crammed with hands-on 1 workshops, demonstrations, com- * petitions and discussions. This year's theme, From the Earth to the Plate, unifies a diverse spectrum of foodies, from international and national chefs, restaurateurs, cookery enthusiasts, tourists and locals to the farmers and artisans who produce the ingredients. Apart from workshops, there is also a three-day Food with Integrity market where visitors can meet farmers and artisans from the Garden Route and Klein Karoo and experience their natural and organic produce.
