Food festival a royal treat for healthy tastes

Gastronomica to promote honest, true, good, fresh and bio-diverse eating habits
KNYSNAS third annual Gastronomica festival will take place from September 23 to October 1, coinciding with Plettenberg Bays Whisky, Whales and Jazz festival.
The food festival aims to provide a platform for international and local chefs, restaurateurs, tourists and locals, as well as artisans and farmers.
Gastronomica comprises ten days of hands-on workshops and demonstrations.
The festival kicks off with a food theatre on Sunday, September 23, where visitors can meet farmers and artisans from the Garden Route and Klein Karoo, sampling their produce.
The festival will culminate in a chefs gala dinner where top South African and international chefs each present one of the five courses. Guests will be let in on the gastronomic secrets of the chefs while being entertained by local performers.
Another highlight of the festival Is the decadent chocolate and dessert afternoon.
Nicholas van der Walt of the Saxon Boutique Hotel in Johannesburg will give a demonstration using chocolate as the main ingredient for his cakes, desserts, pastries and even drinks. There will also be chocolate exhibits and tastings for sweet-toothed food enthusiasts.
International baker and author James MacGuire will host workshops on the art of bread baking, while Garth Stroebel of the South African Culinary Academy will demonstrate recipes from his book, Modern South African Cuisine.
He combines traditional South African culinary herItage with intriguing new flavours and the influences of contemporary cooking.
Fathers and sons can enter the fish for tomorrow fishing day. They will learn about of fshore, coastal and inland ecosystems and responsible environmental practices.
There will also be childrens cooking workshops.
Apart from celebrating a love of good food, the festival aims to encourage participants to adopt a lifestyle including the concept of food with integrity.
To this end, only the freshest seasonal produce will be used and none of the dishes will contain preservatives, MSG or other additives, coiourants or long-life Ingredients.
