Timothy Twidle GARDEN ROUTE CORRESPONDENT

THE Gastronomica food festival kicks off in Knysna today and this year showcases “conscious living” to deliver the message that people should be aware of what they eat.

The festival features demonstrations and workshops, show-and-tell talks and a gala dinner.

In addition, there will be music by the Marimba Band of Grahamstown, a fashion show, Indian dance, a whisky tasting and a symphony concert by the Knysna Musicians.

The youngsters will be treated to demonstrations, such as how to bake cookies and cupcakes.

The range of talks include how to read food labels and the essentials of bio-diversity.

A Food Theatre today includes family fishing, demonstrations by the chefs of the 11 chosen Gastronomica restaurants, dance, song and music throughout the day and a food drama, created especially for this year‘s festival.

Festival organiser Pat Mulder said they wanted to focus on Knysna‘s growing reputation as a centre of culinary excellence.

The festival ends on Sunday.
