KNYSNA‘S elderly will be honoured for their contribution to the community as part of the town‘s National Heritage Day celebrations tomorrow.
Mayor Eleanore Bouw-Spies said the municipality had arranged transport for elderly Knysna residents to attend a function at the Sizamile/Smutsville community hall in Sedgefield, starting at 1pm.
She said history and heritage were important, “and who better to remind us than the elderly in the community?”
“On Wednesday we want to acknowledge and celebrate the contributions by the elderly citizens towards the economic development of Knysna, and for holding together the social moral fabric of society through these trying times.”
Bouw-Spies said in keeping with the government‘s ubuntu nation-building campaign, which has just been re-launched, “this day should also be about uniting the community in celebrating our diverse heritage”.
Heritage Day also marks the start of the annual Knysna Gastronomica food festival, and visitors can meander through local history with a Heritage Walk guided by Debbie Stanley and Hattie Thesen from Eco-Ed between 10am and noon.
A Knysna Tourism spokesman said the walk was free. “It is a brilliant walk along the historic icons in the CBD that will open your eyes to the amazing old buildings we have in our town.”
