Wine & Service Training

Gastronomica provides Wine and Service training for the Hospitality Industry

On the 18th and 19th August, Jane Simon, Knysna’s Wine Ambassador held a training session, at The Boatshed, for Restaurants participating in Gastronomica 2008.  Jane first went through the whole process of how wine is made and  explained the different processes of making a bottle of wine, sold at different price points. The various Wine Regions were also discussed, showing how the wines can differ coming from different Regions.  Part of the idea behind the exercise was so that students could have a better understanding of their wine lists and how to sell onto customers.

They then went through a wine tasting, some of the students had never tasted wine before and so spitting was the order of the day!  They tasted a range of cultivars, showing them the difference between a wooded and an unwooded wine.

They also discussed the whole intriguing Champagne story and explained the various styles of Champagne and our South African Cap Classiques.

It was in the form of a workshop and the students had great fun trying to open a simple screw cap . . .   much spoken about in the Industry today.

All in all it was a good exercise.    After all knowledge is king and what Jane tried to bring across to the students is that it can be turned into cash.

Should you wish to know more about the training that Jane offers, she can be contacted on 082 780 9989 or jinty@mweb.co.za.
