Woodmill Lane’s Potjie Competition

ENTRANT DETAILS AND INFORMATION

Please see below the requirements, rules and regulations of the competition:

RULES AND REGULATIONS
  • All entrants must be at the Woodmill Lane Piazza no later than 9:00am on the day for registration at the main table opposite Clicks. Please don’t forget to bring your R100 entry fee with you.
  • If entering as a team, a maximum of 4 persons is permitted.
  • Only 1 potjie will be judged per entry/team i.e. main pot (meat/vegetarian dish) and one side dish (pot bread or starch – to serve 3 people/judges)
  • Each team must supply their own cooking utensils, ingredients, gas fire equipment, crockery etc. A table and chairs will be provided at the venue. You may wish to bring an umbrella.
  • A minimum of a size 2, 3-legged potjie pot may be used. Note this must be supplied by the entrant/s.
  • When starting the pot contestants may brown onions or similar ingredients and remove them from the pot to be added again later but once the main ingredients are placed in the pot contestants may not stir them (a possible exception might be made for pasta).
  • Each team will be responsible for the safety of their own site. Contestants and spectators enter at their own risk.
  • All cooking must be carried out on site. No ingredients may be pre-cooked off site (raw ingredients will be checked prior to cooking).
  • Judges will judge the ingredients, mise en place (preparation prior to service), the originality, the taste and final presentation, which includes theme/table/stand décor. Please provide your own serving dishes for the 3 judges as this forms part of your presentation.
  • All raw ingredients must be made available for inspection. Your recipe (a brief description of the ingredients and method) must be presented to the judges on inspection of your raw ingredients, which will take place between 9:30 and 10:00 am. Any cut of meat, poultry or fish may be used. Judging will take place from 13:00, or before if ready. When you are ready for judging, please advise the Potjie Co-coordinator. Prize Giving will take place at 14:00.
  • You will be judged on taste, creativity, and décor. Please have 2 recipe copies available – 1 for judges and 1 for presentation.
  • Please remember each pot must serve at least 3 portions for judging.
  • There must be at least one representative of your own team at the cooking area at all times. Your cooking area will be approximately 2m². Allocation of sites will be on a “lucky draw system”. You will be allocated a site number by a potjie official. You are responsible for clearing and cleaning of your site. Please leave it in the condition you found it.
  • This is a family day, so family member and friends are welcome. Lots of fun to be had!

HELPFUL HINTS:

The judges will be looking for food that is prepared to look appetizing, healthy and hygienic.

Don’t utilise methods in which you are not skilled. Rather stick to what you know. Do not stir your pot while it is cooking, although there are no regulations against gently shaking the pot while ingredients are cooking!

When the judges approach your stand don’t dish up your potjie yet. The judges will want to see your potjie and do some of their judging based on how the pot/ingredients look. Once they have visually judged you may offer to dish up for them. Some judges will prefer to dish up for themselves to view the layering of ingredients in the pot. Others might request that you dish up certain items only, while other judges might opt to taste your sauce/gravy before tasting the meat.

CONDITIONS:
  • The judges have the right to test and examine all exhibits and to extract samples where necessary.
  • The decision of the judges in all cases is final. Competitors have no right to appeal.
  • The organising committee will not, under any circumstances, accept responsibility for damage or loss of an exhibit, dishes or personal effects, but all reasonable precautions will be taken to avoid such damage or loss.
  • The organisers reserve the right to remove exhibits from the exhibition stand if and when the exhibit has deteriorated beyond acceptable standards, and/or if the exhibitor fails to remove the exhibit at the specified time.
  • The organising committee has the right to refuse any entry that does not comply with the rules or any specific requirements or limitations stated.
